The Summer Of Superheroes

The Summer Of Superheroes

We’re not sure what’s going on but it seems like the summer of 2019 is all about superheroes and we don’t mean the Avengers. Every television network from premium subscription providers like Starz, HBO, and Amazon Prime to FX and Netflix have decided to come out with their version of a superhero show this summer. What’s shocking is that they’re all a more modern take on the typical ‘super’ in which their characters are tortured by their powers or the ‘supes’ themselves are the bad guys. The two shows that have really stood out though are Amazon Primes’s The Boys and Starz’s The Rook. The titles themselves wouldn’t make you suspect that they are about humans with special powers but they most definitely are.
The Summer Of Superheroes

Amazon Prime’s The Boys
This has been a surprise summer hit from Amazon. It seems like everything they produce lately is proverbial gold. This latest offering which just came out this month features a band of superheroes known as The 7 which are primarily used as money makers for their agency. ‘Supes’ as they are known are not feared by the public but instead heralded and are considered the elite of society. You would think they would be a rather moral crew as they are expected to save people on a regular basis but they nothing if not naughty. All of their good deeds are staged for mass approval ratings in this somewhat alternate universe but they are really the dregs of society. If you thought Deadpool was great than this band of misfit superheroes and those trying to take them down will be right up your alley. Plus, it has actors Karl Urban and Tomer Kapon which makes it even more watchable.

Starz’s The Rook
If you are looking for a more serious take on the whole humans with superpowers thing, then The Rook will be your superhero show of choice. It is set in London, England and centered around a group of people called EVA’s which stands for Extreme Variant Abilities. It begins with the character of Myfanwy surrounded by bodies with her mind completely wiped which sets her on a wild goose chase around the country for who exactly she is and just what her abilities are. Throw in a special secret EVA unit within Whitehall, a Russian EVA trading group and you have the setting for a pretty wild ride with some intriguing powers that show up along the way.
