This couple found an abandoned baby animal and raised it to be their pet
Many people in the world own pets. Apparently, 68% of households in the United States are home to one of these animal companions, whether they be a dog, cat, fish, or something wonderfully exotic. Given the majority of people in the nation are pet owners, it’s safe to say that there’s a lot of love for animals here. With that being said, what would you do if you discovered one had suddenly taken residence in your house?
We’re accustomed to the idea of strays wandering in through cat flaps and trying to win over the hearts of the people who live there. However, we can’t say we’re too familiar with stories of animals climbing in through 10-story windows and setting themselves up on someone’s bed.
However, that’s precisely what happened in a New York City apartment a few years ago. The resident was shocked when he learned about his new roommate, especially when he realized it was a squirrel. Considering these animals typically live in the wild, why was this one now living in his apartment?
Desperate times
Usually, the worst that can happen when you leave a window open is that you get flies or other insects wandering into your room. It’s very rare that another animal decides to come in and scope out the place, especially when you live on the 10th floor of an apartment building.
However, this squirrel was apparently determined to seek refuge in someone’s home, hence their dedication to climbing so high and sneaking in through the window.
Their new home
The discovery of the squirrel was made on a random evening in March. The apartment’s tenant had just arrived home from another day at work when he saw something unexpected in his bedroom.
There were twigs and leaves all over the place, and they appeared to have been constructed into a nest. That wasn’t what really caught his attention though. The man was shocked to discover that underneath his pillow were a couple of baby squirrels.
Through the window
It seems that their mother had given birth to them earlier in the day and built the nest so she could look after her two newborns. Close to the bedroom window, there was a big tree in which the mother squirrel must have lived.
Although it is very unusual for the animal not to make a nest between the branches and out of the way of pray. It seemed the squirrel wandered into the home and found a comfortable spot to have her babies.
What to do?
It’s not every day that you come home to find wild animals sleeping in your bed. The tenant was utterly stunned and not sure what to do about the situation. He couldn’t have these babies sleeping in his bed, but he also wasn’t going to chuck them out.
They’d literally just been born, and they were still very weak. He needed advice on what to do, but he wasn’t sure who to turn to. The tenant frantically searched the internet, scrolling down numerous suggestions of what he should do, until he saw a link pointing him in the direction of two people.
