Waiter couldn’t believe what customer wrote on his receipt
For anyone who has worked in the service or hospitality industry, they know that it is by no means an easy job. Waiters and waitresses, in particular, have to be able to remember orders, keep a smile on their faces, and attend to all of the needs their customers may have. When a restaurant is understaffed it can be mayhem, and if there is only one server for the outside seating or the inside they can often be seen running around trying to keep everyone comfortable. Most of the time customers are oblivious to what is going on in the periphery. They just want to enjoy their meal, chat with their friends, and then go about their day. For one such server, he found himself in the position of being the sole waiter outside on a Friday night in Roseville, California. Weekend nights are always busy, but he did his best to keep his cool and work through his tables in a methodical manner while maintaining a big smile and providing top notch service. This did not go unnoticed by one of his customers.
A Silent Observer
David Fabila was a server from California who found himself working on a busy Friday night. With the warm summer air, all of the patrons at the wine bar were sharing a glass of wine with their friends and family out on the patio that night. As David went about his business, he kept catching the eye of one of the customers.
David proceeded to set the bill down on this man’s table and then had to check on another.
The Mysterious Stranger
Upon depositing the bill on the table and bustling off, this mysterious stranger got up and walked out of the busy bar to continue on with his night. David thought that this man had not paid his bill quickly scooped it up and proceeded to catch up with him. He did not want to be stuck having to cover this bill from his wages for the night.
David really needed the money from this job, he had a family that needed all of the support he could give them and this was actually a secondary job. As he went after this customer, things took a strange turn when he noticed what was on the bill.
A Growing Family
A family man, David already had three children with a fourth on the way so money was always a bit tight. His family residence was in Sacramento, not Roseville. He commuted to this job so that he could make some extra money for when the new baby arrived.
A bartender by trade, David was not used to having to serve the busy patio section but he was always up for a challenge so he pulled it off with aplomb, but he would not have a customer walk out on a bill. That was not something he could let slide.
A Helping Hand
As the evening progressed, and the patio started to fill up David was not sure if he was going to be able to manage all the tables. He did ask if anyone from inside could be spared to assist him for some of the busiest times but no one was available. The entire establishment was overrun with patrons.
He was mentally and physically exhausted from his day shift at his primary job, and now he was swamped at this one. He really just needed someone to give him a helping hand. He was about to receive it but from a very unexpected place.
