When this boy shared his Kool-Aid with the mailman, his mom couldn't believe what happened

As we go about our day we often don’t notice the little things around us, like the postman delivering the mail or the person bagging our groceries. There is a disconnect that happens where you’re busy glancing at your phone or your watch ready to move on to your next task. But children are different in this. They are inquisitive by nature and generally very kind because they have not yet grown up and seen how life can sometimes make one a little bit less kind.
For one mom, she had no idea that her son was performing selfless little acts of goodness until he received a letter one day. At first, she was suspicious, why would someone be sending a letter to her son who is only 5. As she read it, she knew that this was a moment that the world needed to know about. As soon as she posted a picture of the letter it went viral and the public outpouring of kindness was astounding. Meet Adam

The son at the heart of this story is young Adam Houssami. He and his family had lived in Dearborn in the state of Michigan his entire life. Summers are very hot and winters are very cold.

Like any young child, a Kool-Aid stand seemed like a great way to make a couple of dollars to buy ice creams with. $0.50 seemed like a reasonable price to him and that is what he set his rate at for a cup of Kool-Aid.

Summer Heat

It was a rather hot day when Adam decided to put his table and chair out, along with his little sign for his Kool-Aid stand on the sidewalk in front of his home. He was really excited for people to walk by, stop and have a glass of his refreshing Kool-Aid. He had worked out his own little business plan and couldn’t wait to get started.

His plan was to hopefully make a lot of money or in kid terms enough to “hit the candy store with it.” Krista, his mom, was really proud of her boy and she didn’t see any problem in letting him do what he wanted to do. Encouraging him, she never could have known what was going to happen.

Passerby

Everything seemed perfectly normal as Krista sat on her porch and watched Adam plying his Kool-Aid to passersby. Most people smile happily at Adam and gave him a few dollars for a cup of cold kool-aid on a hot summers day. So far, so good.

Things got a bit strange though when she had to pop inside her home to get her sunglasses. There weren’t many people walking up and down at this time so she thought it would be ok to take an eye of Adam for just a minute or two.

A Man In A Van

Krista had only turned her back for a second to get her glasses but as soon as she turned around she saw that a large van had pulled up next to Adam’s Kool-Aid stand. Krista felt the terror that every parent feels in that moment of their child being too far away from them to protect.

She immediately hustled out of the house and over to Adam to see what was going on. Of course, when you are a parent, the slightest change in circumstances around your children can be terrifying. So what was the van doing there? Had they noticed Adam on the sidewalk?

Panicked Parent

By the time she made it to Adam’s side the man was gone and Adam appeared to be safe. Hopefully, that would be the last alarming incident for Krista. The main important thing was that Adam was ok.

Adam was simply sitting at his Kool-Aid stand minding his own business after the stranger departed and Krista was obviously freaked out. She demanded that Adam tell her exactly what had just happened.

The Stranger

What did the man want? Did he buy a glass of Kool-Aid? She really just needed to know that nothing horrible had been said to Adam.

The good kid he is, Adam just looked at her and launched into the story that the man had told him. It was nothing that Krista could have ever have imagined and it actually made her feel incredibly sad that something like that had been told to her son at such a tender age.

The Story

Krista was hopeful that Adam had maybe just sold the man a cup of Kool-Aid and nothing untoward had happened. Every parent knows that even the safest of neighborhoods can have unsavory characters roll through.

But for Adam, this wasn’t the case, the story was about to lead to a place that Krista hadn’t even thought of. As she wondered what the truth of the matter was she finally got her answer.

Who was he?

Instead, it was a mailman in his mail delivery truck. Due to problems with his regular van, the mailman was in an unbranded rental. When passing by, he had pulled up to the curb where Adam was all set-up with his Kool-Aid.

He simply told the little boy about his day and how hard his job can be in the summer when the heat is at an all-time high and he has to drive all over the city. It appeared as if the mailman was harmless and had just stopped for a brief chat.

The Mailman

Adam relayed all of this information to his mother which made her feel a lot better about the situation but then he also said something which really surprised her. The mailman had been working all day and driving around dropping everyone’s packages and letters off.

But he did not have anything cool to drink in his mail truck. Adam asked if he would like a glass of Kool-Aid to help with the summer heat.

Is Everything Really OK?

Krista continued to ask Adam questions to make sure his recollection of the incident was as sweet and innocent as she had hoped. After all, driving around in a van all day can be a lonely job, and there’s no harm in someone stopping for a chat with Adam, is there?

Adam continued to reassure his mom that everything was fine but what she heard next definitely stunned her and made her think about her son in a new light.

No Money

There was just one problem. The mailman did not have $0.50 on him. He did not have anything to give Adam in exchange for a chilled glass of Kool-Aid which he so desperately wanted. Adam thought nothing of that and simply handed it to him saying that he needed it.

Hearing this, his mother Krista could not stop herself from feeling that her son was truly a special little boy. This was a true gift of kindness.

Empathy

Adam had always been an empathetic child which shone through in his interactions with others on a regular basis. This situation with the postman was just the latest in a long string of little acts of kindness that Adam had done for people.

Krista loved that sweet little Adam just gave someone he saw in need a cool drink to help get him through his work day. But what came next shocked her.

Business Was Slow

Running a lemonade stand or a Kool-Aid one in Adam’s case wasn’t an easy job. He had to get everything set up, make the Kool-Aid, and then try and drum up some business from people walking by. It became a little bit disappointing for him when he had put in all of this work and had not had very many customers.

How could people not want Kool-Aid on a hot day he wondered to himself? Krista felt for him and tried to get her friends and neighbors to stop by.

A Letter

After the mailman incident, Adam continued with his Kool-Aid stand day after day with little to no return. Then, one day something unexpected arrived which caused quite a stir.

Krista grabbed the mail from her mailbox as she always did and saw a folded up note addressed to her son. Feeling slightly suspicious that someone was writing to her son she decided to read the letter first to make sure that it was appropriate.

What Did The Letter Say?

Technically opening the mail of someone else is illegal but as Adam is a minor and Krista wanted to make sure there was nothing hurtful in the letter it made sense that she would read it. Some bullies like to write mean notes and if that was what this was then Adam did not deserve that or need to read it.

But instead, it was something truly amazing and from someone who wanted Adam to know that they truly appreciated their simple act of kindness.

Thank You Note

It turns out this lovely note was from the thirsty mailman from last week. He had decided to thank young Adam for giving him a glass of Kool-Aid even though he was short on cash that day.

It was so hot out that it saved him in his time of need. He finished the letter with “Stay cool, dude” which is exactly what Adam did. He is certainly a cool little guy. But the mailman had one more surprise up his sleeve for Adam.

What Did It Say?

Looking at the note, it read, “Adam, Remember last week you were selling Kool-aid on a hot day? I didn’t have any money but you offered me Kool-aid anyways. Thanks man! I was really thirsty.”

It seemed that Adam had really made an impression on the mailman. After all, good deeds go a long way. The note continued, “Good things happen to good people like you. Stay cool dude – Mailman”.

Good Deed

So, what did he mean when he wrote: “Good things happen to good people like you?” Was the mailman trying to tell him something or just simply lift his spirits? Either way, Adam and Krista couldn’t believe that they mailman went out of his way to write such a note.

However, it seems there was indeed more to it, and that particular line was a big clue for what the mailman had in store for Adam.

One More Thing

Most of the time good deeds go unrewarded which is fine, we don’t do good things for the reward but because someone in need could benefit from a helping hand.

Young Adam had been brought up to live this way and that shone through during his interaction with the mailman. The mailman decided to pay Adam back in his own very special way. He decided that one cup of Adam’s Kool-Aid was worth a lot more than $0.50.

Money Money Money

Inside the note, the mailman had enclosed a $20 bill for his cup of Kool-Aid. This was A LOT of money for a little guy like Adam. He had been hoping to sell about ten cups so that he could have some spare money. But now he had the equivalent amount of money to 40 cups sold.

This was a way better way to make that amount of money than trying to sell the way he had. It was just so generous and his mom could not believe how kind that mailman was.

Going Viral

With Adam’s good deed being recognized by the recipient of it, his mother Krista decided that she wanted the world to know about the mailman as well. After snapping a quick pic of the letter and putting it on social media, the post began to make waves as more and more people read it and started sharing the story.

People just loved all the good vibes that the story gave them and how just one little gesture can have such a huge impact.

When this story went viral lots of local newspapers became interested in it and wanted to do some human interest pieces on Krista, Adam, and the anonymous mailman.

Krista did a few interviews but it was not for fame, all she wanted to do was get the word out that she has a great child and their postman is a great guy as well. It is all about paying it forward which is how Krista and the mailman see it at the end of the day.

Do Unto Others

If you want to be treated with kindness then you must also work on being kind to others. Good deeds for others usually means good things for yourself along the way. An act of kindness does not have to be a big thing like buying someone a car it can simply being giving some lunch to a homeless person, or helping out at your local animal shelter.

Any kindness goes a long way. And you never know when you might need a helping hand which means you should always extend yours if you are able.

Adam’s story did not go just a little bit viral, no, it went big. As soon as the post went live within a matter of hours 500+ Facebook users had reposted it on their own profiles. Soon enough it started to make its way around North America and eventually into the global sphere.

It actually worked to spark a movement of generosity the summer it happened. Everyone was just so happy to see something good happening in the world.

Adam On TV

In Adam’s home state of Michigan, the Detroit station WXYZ decided to air a special on him. They did a short interview with Krista and Adam as a human interest piece and then created the segment as a YouTube video so that people around the globe could access it after seeing it splashed across Facebook.

The story was a huge success and around 64,000 people watched it. Adam was now a summertime sensation!

Praise For Adam

The YouTube video allowed people from all over the chance to discuss Adam’s good deed and interact together. The comments and the threads created from the video were so positive and uplifting that it seems like Adam may have inspired a new movement and restored people’s faith in humanity.

Particularly children. It seems like everyone should take a page from this young boy’s book and learn to love each other. His story even made it on to a local news station in Nebraska that’s how far reaching this deed was felt.

Stay Humble

Adults tend to let praise go to their heads but not Adam. He did not let his newfound fame change him or make him feel like he was better than anyone else. He now has it ingrained in him that you must always be nice to people.

And he hopes that everyone will follow his example and even if they only have something small to give they will. He just wants everyone to be happy and be the best version of themselves.

Say No To Negativity

The reason this particular story is so important is that a lot of the stories we see on social media are negative. They highlight horrific world events, natural disasters, and other instances that leave you wondering what the world is becoming.

But this story shows that there are still decent people in the world and we want to hear more of these stories. The power of positivity is real, and if you do unto others as you would have them do unto you they will.

Krista is thankful that she has raised such an amazing little boy who continues to astound her on a daily basis. But the moral of this story is that everyone has it in them to be good and kind. She wants the world to see this and hopes that as Adam grows older he continues to be kind to the best of his ability.

She believes he will inspire everyone around him to do the same. The future is not as bleak as the news would sometimes have us believe.
