Bride told her fiance that the sentimental ring he proposed with wasn’t good enough

With so much planning and preparation going into a proposal and the wedding day itself, marriage can often easily become more of a materialistic thing rather than a sentimental thing between two loved ones.
When you think of a wedding, what’s the first thing you think of? Is it a white wedding dress? Is it the horse and carriage? Is it the grand venue? Well, for one bride-to-be, the main thing she seemed to care about when proposed to by her fiance was the ring he put on her finger. She cared so much in fact that she was really not happy when she saw what ring it was.
To make it mean more to him and his fiancée, the husband-to-be thought it would be a wonderful thing to propose with a ring that meant more to him and his family than just a bit of bling sitting behind a jeweler’s glass cabinet. He wanted the proposal to be special. However, things didn’t quite go to plan when she saw what he wanted to put on her finger.

The proposal planned

After having been together for a whole decade, with a four-year-old daughter, this couple was very much in love. They wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. However, the man was yet to pop the big question.

Marriage was always on their agenda, it just simply hadn’t been the right time yet. But one day, the man decided it was definitely time. He was going to propose, and it was going to be special.

Teasing the ring

After ten years together, she knew in her heart that he was going to propose soon. He was also sending photographs of potential rings to her sister, who of course found it all too tempting to show her. She just couldn’t keep the excitement in!

To top it off, all of the ring photographs he had sent his soon-to-be sister-in-law were from Tiffany & Co, and this jeweler was her favorite. To know he was going to be proposing with a Tiffany ring made her uncontrollably excited. She couldn’t wait for him to get down on one knee.

Popping the question

The couple’s anniversary soon came about, and she had a good feeling that this was the perfect day for him to propose. They spent the evening having a lovely romantic meal at their favorite restaurant, and then came home to watch a movie. As the credits rolled, she noticed him getting a little twitchy and starting to sweat.

This was the big moment! With a gigantic smile on his face, he slipped off the sofa and got down on one knee. He opened the ring box and asked the big question: “Will you marry me?”

An unexpected surprise

Feeling a rush of emotions, she looked down at the box and gasped. She was overwhelmed, not knowing what to say or do. The ring wasn’t a Tiffany ring like she had expected… Instead, it was something that didn’t have much sparkle to it at all.

She was positively astounded about the surprise, and so happy to have a wonderful fiance, but the ring was a major disappointment. She couldn’t hide her true feelings about it either. Her frowning face said a thousand words whether she liked it or not.

Sentiment

After the proposal, she decided to be honest with him, telling him she’s not exactly the biggest fan of the ring. In fact, she told him she really didn’t like it all. However, there was a particular reason he decided to propose with this ring.

It was the engagement ring which had been passed down to him by his mother, who told him she wanted him to have it, hoping it would bring as much joy to him as it had with her. Unfortunately, his father had passed away and so his mother wanted the ring to find a new home.

A family tradition

This ring meant a lot to him and his family. It symbolized the enduring love his father had for his mother, and he wanted to show the same kind of impassioned love to his own wife-to-be.

He was overjoyed at his mother offering the ring for the engagement, and there was no question as to whether this was what he wanted to do. It was perfect! And he really did think she was going to love it.

An ugly ring

It could now become a family tradition, and he hoped she would understand and appreciate its sentiment. However, her reaction was not quite what he wanted. Although she admitted her disappointment, the bride-to-be did express her respect for its sentiment. It’s just she thought the ring was a little on the ugly side.

It was rather old, and the stones had lost their sparkle. It certainly did not look as beautifully opulent as a Tiffany ring.

Feeling disappointed

Not only was the ring aesthetically displeasing for an engagement ring, but she had been hoping for a brand new ring to symbolize a brand new start in their lives together. Continuing a tradition was something she felt wasn’t quite right for their relationship.

As a couple, they had gone through a few ups and downs since the beginning of their relationship, and so in her heart, she wanted the ring to represent a new fresh start.

Feeling upset

No matter how much she tried to explain her feelings towards the ring, her fiance didn’t understand. He was heartbroken that she would reject the sentiment. To him, the ring was a sign of true love and the most romantic thing he could imagine.

He felt disappointed, and he felt crushed that an average Tiffany ring would mean more to her. Feeling frustrated, he left their house without saying a word. He needed time and space to think for a while.

Materialism versus sentiment

The woman was left feeling sad and confused herself. She wasn’t usually a materialistic person, so she was even surprised at her own reaction. He knew that she was a romantic person, which is why he probably decided that a hand-me-down ring was the right choice.

So why had she reacted in such a way? Was she in the wrong? Should he have understood her disappointment a little more? She was so upset that this argument had overshadowed their engagement.

Needing some answers

Feeling at fault, the bride-to-be decided that she needed some outside opinions on the whole ordeal, and where else better than to put it up for debate on Reddit? She explained everything that happened, telling users how he proposed, what the ring was, and how both of them reacted.

She wanted to know what the internet thought of her disappointment – was she being ungracious and spoilt? Or did she have a valid point? She needed answers.

Getting some answers

The bride-to-be soon realized that she wasn’t going to get the opinions she wanted. Everyone completely disagreed with her reaction, calling her heartless and childish. Her post started filling up with users attacking her selfish response to such a wonderfully thoughtful proposal.

Some were even saying that she didn’t deserve such a loving fiance and that she should be disgusted with herself. If the bride-to-be didn’t already feel upset at her self, then she did now.

Not the answers she wanted

The negative responses didn’t stop coming. One user suggested that if she was materialistic enough to value the stones of the ring over the meaning of the ring, then she could cancel the wedding because their marriage was doomed from the start.

Another user told her she was living in a fantasy world and would soon get a rude awakening. The bride-to-be was distraught. These bad reactions were certainly teaching her a lesson.

Attempting to justify

Feeling overwhelmingly disheartened by the responses she was getting, she soon started trying to defend herself by replying to some of the comments. One user commented how she was wrong to undermine the sentimental meaning behind the ring, and she replied back saying it was only the appearance of the ring that she didn’t like.

This was something that was going to be on her finger for the rest of her life, so doesn’t she have the right to think it is too ugly?

Who’s to blame?

Feeling disappointed in herself, the bride-to-be started to understand why she had reacted in that way. Perhaps it was because she had been expecting a lavish Tiffany ring all along? Once he was down on one knee and the box had been opened, perhaps it was inevitable that she would feel some sort of disappointment?

If she hadn’t been expecting a ring like the Tiffany ones in the photos she had been shown, maybe her expectations wouldn’t have been so high?

Sister-in-law

Well, it should be pointed out that the sister-in-law should never have ruined the surprise in the first place. A proposal should be a magical unexpected gesture, and just by telling her sister that he was planning on proposing meant the element of surprise was well and truly lost in the first place.

The fact that she was also showing her the photos of the potential rings sent to her in confidence by the husband-to-be makes the grand proposal even more spoiled.

Monster-in-law

Despite claiming that she loved the sentimental gesture, but hated the appearance of the ring, the bride-to-be should have valued the gesture over its beauty. Her mother-in-law obviously thought very fondly of her to want their engagement ring to be the one which officiated the marriage to her own late husband.

This was a huge deal, and her less-than-pleased reaction tainted the whole gesture for the family.

Going viral

After the post conjured up hundreds of responses, the bride-to-be’s story soon went viral on social media. It received so many heated responses that she eventually deactivated the comments section.

No person should have to receive such negative trolling, but perhaps the backlash may now resonate with her… Maybe even teaching her a lesson in what it means to be so affectionately and meaningfully accepted and welcomed into your new family.

A defender

There was, however, one particular user who decided to defend the bride-to-be. Although she didn’t defend her actions, she did point out that people need to stop being so harsh. The post was created as a means of asking for advice in an attempt to learn something, and so she did not deserve such hateful comments.

Regardless of whether you agree or disagree, such harsh words were not necessary to prove a point. Well said!

Bridezillas

The bride-to-be has since admitted that it was the biggest mistake of her life; even promising that she was going to make amends. On the Reddit post, there were two other similar stories told. One user revealed that her husband was criticized by a Tiffany worker when buying her engagement ring, shaming him for buying an inexpensive ring.

Another user revealed how after her engagement photo went viral online, she and her husband received hatred from strangers pointing out that her ring was far too small.

The true meaning of marriage

The materialistic stories of wedding dramas that we so often see nowadays raise the question of what is marriage really about in the 21st century? It seems from stories like this one that the more expensive a wedding costs, the more meaningful and special it is. However, we have to disagree on that one.

A lesson learned

Most of the comments agreed that the bride-to-be was definitely in the wrong, and thankfully it seemed she admitted her mistakes and agreed herself that the reaction was uncalled for.

She updated her post and explained how she now understands that valuing the appearance of the ring was the wrong thing to do and that she is sorry for causing hurt to her husband who must have found it really upsetting. At least a lesson has been learned here.

A sudden realization

With the woman realizing her mistake and vowing to make amends, it seems we can all learn something from her behavior. Firstly, sentiment wins over physicality any day, with the meaning behind something being much more important than what it looks like.

Secondly, if you don’t quite like the look of a gift, at least just pretend to like it. You don’t want to hurt someone who put a lot of thought into it, do you?
