Amidst the bizarre negativity of today’s world news, we can all safely agree that we are in need of a few hours respite from the rampant gloom of it all. May we humbly suggest you take a trip to your nearest cinema, buy yourself an obscenely large box of popcorn, and revel in the feel-good musical fun of the Mamma Mia sequel.
Mamma Mia returns in this positively delightful second instalment that celebrates the very best sing-along tracks of one of Sweden’s greatest exports, the eternally-loved pop group: ABBA. Filmed in the idyllic and travel lust-inducing islands of Greece, the movie is a vacation in and of itself. The sequel not only boasts the return of the iconic and irresistible Meryl Streep, the movie also gives a relatively rare performance by our most beloved pop idol, Cher.
The movie follows two timelines, one set in present day Greece, as Amanda Seyfried’s character, Sophie, revives her mother’s hotel, and another, set in the color and glory of 1979, as Lily James, playing a young and deliciously optimistic Donna, ventures to the island of Kalokairi. Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skarsgård all make a triumphant return as Sophie’s three Dads, who, for all the combined years between, still have it. The movie is bursting with light-hearted comedic performances, glorious nostalgic costuming and a much-needed dose of romance, all set to the feet-tapping tunes of our favorite 80s pop group.
