The man in the video is Julius Dein, a 24-year-old UK-based street magician. The video footage takes place in the city of Newcastle in northern England where the young social media star was set to show off his best tricks to members of the streetwalking public. Dein subsequently shared an impressive video of highlights to his half a million YouTube subscribers.

Impressive Skills

The video is titled “How to impress a girl with magic tricks” and features Dein performing some of his most impressive illusions. In one scene, he transforms a £10 note into a plastic credit card. He later turns a packet of M&Ms into Skittles, as two attractive women look on in disbelief.

An Early Start

Born in London in 1994, the rising magician showed an interest in magic from the tender age of ten. After watching a magic show with his grandfather, the young boy was left inspired. During his school years, he began to experiment with magic.

A Rising Talent

As a young teenager, Dein was showing off his awe-inspiring skills on the streets of London’s Camden Town when an audience member asked whether he performed at parties. “I printed off some paper business cards and handed them out at a 40th birthday party,” Dein explained. “Business just spiraled.”

An A-List Audience

After leaving high school, Dein went on to pursue his education at London’s prestigious King’s College. As part of his International Relations degree, he spent one year studying in America at UCLA. During his stay in the U.S., Dein performed for world-famous stars including pop singers Katy Perry and Kelly Rowland.

Thousands upon thousands subscribe to his YouTube channel, where he uploads videos of his impressive street performances including memorable tricks like the “invisible chair.”

Family Secrets

Dein is also well known for his pranks and wild social experiments. In one of his videos, which has raked up more than 900,000 views, he tries to convince passing strangers that a pair of electric toothbrush heads can be used in place of Apple earphones. Some of the passersby fall for the stunt, actually inserting the toothbrush heads into their ears.

Underground Experiments

In another popular video segment, Dein carried out a “homophobia experiment” while roaming around the London Underground. He asked two friends to pose as a same-sex couple, while he hurled homophobic insults at the pair in an attempt to gauge how the passing commuters would react. Several strangers reprimand Dein, telling him to leave the couple.

Hilarious Hand Holding

While conducting another social experiment, Dein walks the streets of Brixton in south London, and attempts to hold the hands of strangers. The seemingly harmless gesture inspired some hilarious reactions. Dein told TalkRadio, “It’s such an innocuous action, and it expresses the natural human reaction.”

In Dein’s prank video, some people are obviously confused by the gesture while other broke into laughter once they realized they were being filmed. But others responded angrily. The magician recently told the London Evening Standard, “There were scary moments. That’s what drives the prank.”

In a revealing interview in 2017, Dein revealed that he would be featuring fewer pranks and social experiments. He had now grown a substantial fan base and was ready to return to his “real passion,” magic and illusion.

But even with his growing online presence and resolute devotion to social media, Dein said he’s considering opting into a medium that’s just a tad more old-school: television. While he envisions social media as being his primary platform for now, Dein said that his material would do well for something like “a badass show on Netflix.”

Dein’s subjects are attractive, bikini-clad women reclining beachside: the modern-day equivalent of the magician’s stilettoed assistant. Dein has an entire series devoted to capturing a woman’s attention: There’s “How to impress a girl with magic tricks!,” “How to kiss a girl with a magic trick,” and “How to blow a girl’s mind with FAKE magic!”

Stunt Gone Wrong

Despite his skills, some of his tricks don’t always go according to plan. In one video Julius can be seen inserting a coin into a box of Tic Tacs, only for the lid to immediately fall off. True to his character, the magician laughs off the embarrassing incident.

Dein also uploads videos of his tricks to his Instagram account, where he has accumulated more than three million followers. While majority of his fans are based in the U.S. and Mexico, his videos have been seen around the world.

“Magic isn’t very cool,” he said. “It’s actually quite niche, and it’s difficult to make it relatable. People say I’m like the new wave of magic, not like that old-school David Blaine stuff.” Dein said older magicians who aren’t yet wise to social media will soon be replaced by a new order of Instagram elites.
