Liz could not wait to become a mother but her pregnancy journey was a difficult one. She had severe morning sickness which prompted her doctors to order her to bed rest for weeks on end. “Suddenly there’s this ‘code blue,’ people rushing past me,” Matt recalled tearfully. “All of a sudden it hit me,” he told The Guardian in 2011. “She was going to die, today, here in this hospital. And she was never going to hold her baby.” 27 Hours after giving birth to her daughter, doctors confirmed that a fatal blood clot had traveled to Liz’s lungs and caused a pulmonary embolism.

He had created a space for parents who had experienced similar losses to share their touching stories. Out of the tragedy and horror of Liz’s death, something truly inspirational had arisen. Matt, Liz and Maddy’s story had touched the lives of millions. Run by a group of dedicated volunteers, the Liz Logelin Foundation organized fundraising events like community walks and runs in Matt’s late wife’s memory. A single event raised $4,400 that was intended to go to Matt and Maddy. However, Matt envisioned a different way to honor his loving wife’s memory. “Matt asked me if it was OK if he gave away all the money that had been raised for him and Madeline to the widows and widowers he had met through his blog,” recalled the foundation’s co-executive, Rachel Engebretson. “They didn’t have the same network of support and he wanted to help them.”

A Love Letter


As time moved on, Matt was struck by how much Maddy came to resemble her mother. Although his blogging had been a way to cope with the loss of Liz, it now served a greater purpose. “In many ways, it’s a love letter to Madeline and to Liz,” he said. “Liz will never read it, of course, I want Madeline to know that her dad didn’t just curl up in a ball and start drinking heavily. I want her to know I was out there, doing as much as I could for her, and trying to make her as happy as I could.” Although he didn’t intend to keep the blog running forever, the nature of his work would soon change.

The Year Milestone


The blog’s worldwide popularity soon offered Matt a wealth of career opportunities and possibilities. Matt and Maddie were now also invested in helping other parents and children in similar positions. The father-daughter duo would soon set out to forge a new path that would further change their lives.

In 2009, Matt made the decision to leave his job and pursue a new career. With Maddy by his side, the pair traveled to India where Matt wanted to take time off to write a memoir of his incredible journey. The same year that Matt’s book was published, was also the year when Matt would find love again. The single dad and author started dating Brooke Gullikson, who volunteered at the Liz Logelin Foundation. The two had met the previous year at one of the organization’s fundraisers. Brooke later said that she knew instantly that Matt was the one for her. After such loss and heartbreak, Matt had once again found companionship.

Brooke eventually made the move from Minnesota to Los Angeles to be with Matt and Maddy. Matt felt conflicted, and decided to take to the blog to explain the turn of events. Brooke later conducted an interview with Parenting.com in which she opened up about her struggles with the online criticism of her new relationship.
